Kolkata's POpulation statisticsKolkata has 32% of its population living in slums.
Kolkata has many slums. The Kapali Bagan slum is a dumping ground for Kolkata’s millions and is where poor locals desperately search for plastic and metal to sell. With an estimated one-third of Kolkata's population living in slums and a further 70,000 people completely homeless the poverty is extremely evident. Poor migrants are forced to live in squalid, overcrowded conditions in the bustees. Their "houses" are made from any materials that they can find. Sanitation and sewerage services are not equipped, and often there is no running water. Kolkata has a lower gender ratio than India as a whole at 899 females for every 1,000 males. Kolkata has a literacy rate of 87%, which is higher than the Indian average of 74%.
